Subject: New TNE Career
Message-ID: <9602072251.AA03057@chara.gsu.edu>

Hi,
I came up with a new career for a RC campaign. Its a variationon the
standard marine career. Its an elite regiment of Oriflamme Marines. I
based it on the Special Forces career, because they are both require
prior service in a military career. At the end are four marines that I
rolled up to see how the new career compares with a standard marine,
and one who entered the Special Forces. They all have about the same
number of skills levels, the Special Forces has the most with 31, and
the standard marine has the least with 25, both members of the THIRD
have something in the middle.
This career does uses cyberwear from FFS, I am not trying to turn
Traveller into a Cyberpunk game, I just think this shows how the
Oriflamme Technarchs will use any possible tool, to accomplish their goals.

This career could be used in a non Coalition campaign, by changing
the names. One of the Sworld Worlds might have such a unit.

Lewis

--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Third Armored Infantry Regiment Oriflamme Marines

The Third Armored Regiment is one of the elite groups of
Oriflamme Marines, its history traces all the way back to settlement of
Oriflamme during the Rule of Man. Most military organization have
fanciful nicknames, the Third Armored Regiment is simply the THIRD.
During the Solomani Rim War an Imperial Army General called them "the
Devil's own Regiment" for their forceful resistance of the Imperial
invasion. This saying is the unofficial slogan of the THIRD.
Before the Civil War the Regiment was equipped with battle dress.
The Collapse made the upkeep of large amounts of battle dress difficult, by
1153 the THIRD was forced to come to the conclusion that within 3 years it would
no longer be able to field enough battle dress equipped troops to make
up an entire Regiment. The Generals in charge decided to go with
cybernetics. Oriflamme was able to produce TL-9 cybernetics and some
TL-10 devices. Most members of the THIRD possess two to four
cybernetic devices. Now that Oriflamme has joined the Coalition, it
has access to battle dress that was produced off world. The THIRD has
been fully equipped with this, but still uses cybernetics. The THIRD
also equips its troops with various types of Slow and Fast drugs.
The THIRD is an elite unit, and only admits marines that have already
proved themselves in service to Oriflamme.
The THIRD is used as an assault unit. If there is a piece of ground
that the Generals need, they send the THIRD. They are never used for
garrison duty, or peace keeping. The unit is often dropped behind enemy lines
and into other dangerous positions, without adequate support. Their tactics
tend to emphasize speed and destruction.
The THIRD is only a Regiment, as such it is commanded by a Colonel.
There can only be one Colonel in the THIRD at any time. If the existing Colonel
rolls for a promotion, to take it he must revert to the standard Marines.
Most THIRD officers are too proud to transfer to an ordinary unit, and that is
why the THIRD has such a high promotion roll.

Motivations:
Queen of Spades: Force Commander Treste is the epitome of the ruthless
Oriflamme marine, she will do anything to eliminate the enemy and destroy
their will to fight.
Eight of Diamonds:Treste is possessed by greed, but not for herself, but
for the Oriflamme Technarchs.

Treste was born on Oriflamme in 1168, to parents who worked for the newly
formed Daishow Trust. They raised her to be dedicated to the Trust.
When the Trust started to raise a unit for the Oriflamme Marines, she
joined up. The Marines recognized her talent, and commissioned her as an
officer. She specialized in counter-insurgency and guerrilla warfare.
After the conquest of Spencer she was promoted and sent in to eliminate
resistance. She has instituted draconian measures designed to eliminate
support for the rebellion. Her efforts have proven effective, rebel activity
has fallen by 45%.

Major Nasir "Black Spot" Rashid

Motivations:
Ace of Hearts: Major Rashid is the exact opposite of what most people
think of when they think of Oriflamme Marines. He is often at odds with
his superiors over orders.
Five of Diamonds: Rashid likes luxury. He likes finely made clothing,
beautiful art, good food and other niceties.

Rashid was born one of the Orbital Arcologies that survived the Short Night.
He always dreamed of being a great hero, and saw the Marines as his chance
to be that hero. Soon after joining he began to butt heads with Marine
officers. This didn't do his career much good. After one term he transfered
to the Oriflamme Special Forces. He served three terms specializing in security
for high ranking officials. He can often be found as the bodyguard for a
Technarch who is traveling through the Coalition or beyond.

Motivations:
King of Clubs: Lieutenant Kircher is a brutal thug. He enjoys watching
others suffer. He is a total boor, who most people despise on sight.
Four of Hearts: Kircher does like people, he doesn't understand why
people don't like him. He usually takes out his frustration on his victims.

Kircher's parents were both killed in food riots in the early 70's. He was
assigned to state run orphanage. Here he learned that he had to be strong to
survive, any sign of weakness was seized by the other orphans. At eighteen he
was turned loose, after a few months of wandering, he joined the Marines.
Here he found an outlet for his violent tendencies. In fact the Marines
encouraged them. He was commissioned and after distinguishing himself on
an assault on a Raider's base deep in the Oort Cloud, he was offered a position
in the THIRD. He jumped at the chance. He served with distinction, gathering
a Purple Heart in the assault on Spencer.

Motivations:
Nine of Hearts:Trinka is one of those people, who everyone seems to like.
She knows just what to say to put people at ease. She has hundreds of friends
and can count on their help.
Four of Spades:Trinka would like to be more than a corporal, but she seems
to be too lazy, to actually rise much farther.

Corporal Dobson was raised in a fairly average family, in a fairly average
small town. She and a group of friends went to the big city, one weekend
when she was seventeen. She doesn't remember much of that weekend, but
at the end of it she and three of her friends woke up at an Oriflamme Marine
bootcamp. Her friends fought the enlistment without success, but Dobson
found that she actually liked the marines. It finally gave her life some
direction. She served with distinction, and was given a chance to join
the THIRD, she leapt at the chance. A RAM grenade cost her her arm on Spencer.
She simply had it replaced.

But they're not discrete, nor applying a force. They are defined as
creating a field in which 99% of gravity is blocked. So nothing's cantilevered.

Face it Harold. TNE died not because I don't like it but because
it failed to generate the necessary support. So, as you said, cut
the bullsh*t & admit that you don't really care how little support
TNE garnered, you just want it because it's what you want. Nothing
wrong with that but don't expect me to agree to squander limited
resources on a scheme that's already failed. And, yes, it's failure
*does* mean it is entitled to less, quite a bit less.

To say that TNE died because of 'not enoufgh support'(Talk about a
generic term!) is incredibley simplistic.
There are a multitude of factors as to why GDW folded
1: The RPG industry has been hurting as a whole, even WW is laying off
people.
2: Dangerous Journeys
3: Several failed games on the part of GDW(Cadillacs.. Dangerous..)
4: TNE not having *any* suppliments for about a year.

And for all I'm concerned, unless I get hard statistics from GDW, TNE
did not die. You are making a big assumption there.

Dear Folks -

>From Merrick:
>I still (personally) tend towards the definition:
>Any ship that can't land is USL.
>A ship that can only land with CG is SL.
>A ship that can fly (land without CG) is AF.

Not a bad version of the definition. Now for some related questions:
1. What is the LARGEST ship that can enter atmosphere?
2. What is the largest ship that can land in water?
3. What is the largest ship that can land on land?
(all assuming a 1G world).

My (arbitrary) answers are:
1. 100,000 tons (allows criusers but not battleships)
2. 20,000 tons
3. 5,000 tons

Comments? Also, does anyone know the equivalent tonnage for a
supertanker (relevant to Q2 above)?

2. ANCIENTS

I have posted my Yaskoydray data to Paul Walker.

3. STARPORTS

Jeff, you have hit one of my areas of interest. I used Striker (#1) to work out
how to build a TL 15 starport for Tavonni, armouring those buildings that needed
it, and trying to cover all requirements for the 'port.

If you like, I'll post all the references I found (eg. "from Port to Jump-point"
by Leroy Guatney).

Under CT, one could purchase "jump Tapes", which had the course all ready
and waiting; a ship without a navigator could use them for travelling via
jump. THey were for jump only.

two factors ARE linked].

summary: Virus permanently changes the TNE universe so that a traditional
"imperial" type gov't will not rise again. Hidden fears, paranoia, and
xenophobia are problematic.

If you really want to land with an USL ship to a planet with atmosphere it's
OK to me, but you have to take care of wind speed and atmospheric
conditions. Those ships can't manouver and so they are very vulnerable to
sudden wind changes. And if wind speed is high enough it would cause heat
damage to USL ship. Its IMHO not economically sensible to risk a valuable
spaceship in landing if it can handle its business from orbit. And if they
aren't any orbital stations then they most times aren't any ground control
either (spaceports A, B and some C have orbital stations).
Because were are talking about merchant ships here, were have to consider
economical factors: the much more time needed to land and get off from
planet, risks to ship in atmosphere, stress to crew, price of CG, smaller
cargo capacity if ship has CG, etc.
These are the reasons why in my campaigns USL ships don't land on planets,
although they can do so if absolutely necessary.

Paul Walker requests for T4:
..
  - REMBERANCE - A Reprint of CT/MT/TNE out of print material.
Three or more seperate books. (For the benefit of people
like me :) who didn't get on the bandwagon until too late.)
..

Hey, remember TSR's repackaging of their old AD&D modules into single
volumes? T1:Village of Hommlet thru to Q1:Queen of the Demonweb Pits all
got thrown together as one (or two?) much larger volumes which contained
all 8 thru 12 or so original adventures.

Well...

It would be pretty cool if the entire JTAS series could be republished
(verbatim) in a few, large (that is, normal-sized) volumes. 48(?) A5 pages
per issue would translate to 24 A4 pages - allowing a full year (produced
quarterly, right?) to occupy a single 96 page volume. If we want the best
of the best, then just collate the Best of the JTAS! The same could be
done with the A5 Supplements/(Double) Adventures and what have you.
Limited (re)runs for those still using CT/MT.

I don't know about the legalities. I don't know about the economics. All
I know is that I would happily shell out the big-bucks for a complete set
of (The Best of) JTAS without even flinching.

Jump Drives, Improved Performance & Tech Levels

The standard Traveller Jump Drives are *allegedly* available from the pseudo-TLs
of 9-5
and, basically unchanged from CTrav, require (1 + JNo)% of Hull Volume for the
actual Drive and (5 x Drive Volume) for fuel. These are obviously *not* really
"new" TLs as they all cost 0.3 MCR per ton and mass 3 tons per cm to TL/13,
2.5 tons at TL/14 and 2 tons at TL/15. Only the latter two levels could really
be regarded as "new" TLs. Now, bear with me for a moment --

                    Maximum Drive
Jump Value Mass Fuel Mass Mass/J1 Fuel/J1

J6 7 35 1.16 5.8

(All figures are as a % of Hull Volume)

Obviously (and it confirms this in MTrav and TNE) the fuel requirements go down
for 1 Parsec Jump whenever a "new" TL of Jump Drive becomes available . . . but,
we are asked to believe, even a TL15 world capable of producing a J6 drive, can
only produce a TL9 equivalent *efficiency* J1 drive. In other words, that TL 15
world, capable of producing a 1 Parsec jump for 1.16% of Hull Volume in Drives
and 5.8% in fuel can only produce a standalone J1 Drive as inefficient as a J1
TL9 unit!

Surely they *should* be able to produce a J1 unit @ the reduced volume (and,
thus, reduced mass and cost) and reduced fuel requirement, as *should* be the
hallmark of any real improvement in technology? After all, at the higher TL,
they are more efficient art producing the effects of low tech and low tech
equivalent equipment with their hi-tech industrial base!

Again, it seems completely against all logic that "improved" technology is so un
realistically limited. It's like trying to get us to accept that a 1996 technolo
gy produced Maritime Steam engine would have the same hp/wt ratio and cost
the same in relative terms, not to mention having the same fuel efficiency, as a
n 18th century Newcomen & Watt Beam engine! In a word, unlikely! Seems to me tha
that you've either got to accept that the TL rating system is seriously stuffed
in a purely
practical sense in that it cannot (well, *does* not) allow for these sorts of
improvements *or* you've got to admit that J1 (and other J ratings less than the
current maximum) *should* reduce mass/fuel requirements as noted above.

Of course, those who treat FF&S (or MTrav, or CTrav) as "holy writ" won't come
at *either* idea -- after all, the "rules" state that J1 Drives are *always* 2%
Drive and
10% fuel *regardless* of the logical holes that the rest of the system punches i
into that -- or *has* punched into *it* as a result!

Sort of like Galileo and Copernicus refusing to believe that observable facts sh
owing that
the sun was the centre of the solar system just because the Pope's "rule book"
stated that teh earth was!

Sure, we're talking SF "pseudo-reality" here rather than the "real
world". but don't we have a right to expect some sort of system that *seems*
more real than Traveller allows.

OK. We accept (as someone noted recently) a number of "suspensions of disbelief"
to allow the game to work -- that is, gadgets or game system rules that are
completely ridculous (like the flat, 2d universe to make mapping workable) when
one
stops to think about them, or which are impossible according to our current
understanding of the universe (such as JDrives, CG lifters and Thruster Plates,
HePlaR drives, and Psionics). But the *rest* of the game system and background
has to have some semblance of corresponding to reality *or* we find our
boundaries of belief are strained beyond the point of credulity!

So, why should we accept, say, that a TL7 Portable Airlock (as described in the
Imperial Encyclopaedia, IIRC) is the last and final word in Portable Airlock tec
even at TL15-16 ... or at higher TLs? Are we to accept that such devices can
*never* be made more cheaply, of lighter but still as strong materials, or less
bulky materials? No! Nor should we, by this reasonable standard, assume that
JDrives never improve their efficiency and size for *old* models as *new* models
are introduced.

Well, that's my 2c worth anyway.
